Erbil, Iraq
Erbil has a population of about 1 million people and is the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Compared with other parts of Iraq, Erbil is safe and making steady progress towards reconstruction following the worst years of the Saddam era.
The Citadel town of Erbil lies in the middle of the greater city of Erbil, the Capital City of the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq. It is about 350 kilometres Northeast of Baghdad, 80 kilometres Southeast of Mosul, and 96 kilometres Northwest of Sulaimaniya.
The citadel was started around 6000 years ago, some two thousand years before Stonehenge was built. Today, the Citadel is being slowly restored. UNESCO is funding this important project.
