Kashmir, India
In 1989, Kashmir was about to enter into a period of unrest marked by violence and bomb attacks. We did not know that and flew there on honeymoon in April. Our reward was the sight of a mushroom cloud of smoke rising into the above the site of the Kashmir and Jammu Liberation Front’s first bomb attack on a public convenience outside a police station in Srinagar.
My grandfather had visited Kashmir in 1920, with his wife, Adele. The photographs show that they also took my father. On our return, he asked Wendy of she had enjoyed her first visit to India. When she told he how much she had enjoyed the trip he smiled. “I am so glad you liked my country”.
