Our places

This map marks the route of a journey that I took in 1987, starting in Athens and ending in the mountain town of Nagarkot. Many of the places visited are shown in photographs on this site. I then travelled to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore for a holiday to recover from nearly 12 months of hard travelling. On the way home, I visited Hong Kong and Southern California friends. When an old rugby teammate turned up, we went on a driving trip that took us from the Grand Canyon to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Sadly, the planned trip to Madison […]

Reindeer stoganoff

Reindeer Stroganoff is a dish that puts a unique twist on the classic Beef Stroganoff by using reindeer meat as the primary protein. Reindeer meat is lean and has a slightly gamey flavor, making it an interesting and unconventional choice for this Russian-inspired dish. I first ate Reindeer stroganoff in a hut on the East coast of Svalbard. Outside, the temperature was a bracing -30C℃, but inside, it was a toasty 22℃. Our Italian guide prepared the meal, which he served with rice. It was delicious. It’s essential to cook the reindeer meat thoroughly, but be careful not to overcook […]

Rice and peas

The first time I cooked this, I was feeding some West Indian friends. They were very polite and did not comment on my use of ‘peas’ instead of ‘kidney beans’. I live and learn. This aromatic and flavorful rice and peas dish is a staple in Caribbean cuisine and pairs exceptionally well with many West Indian dishes. In many Caribbean recipes, “peas” refers to legumes such as kidney beans rather than actual peas. The classic Caribbean dish “rice and peas” traditionally uses kidney beans. 0 likes

Jerk chicken

When I think of jerk chicken, my memory takes me back to visits to Jamaica and also the Notting Hill Carnival, where the smells of jerk chicken cooking on barbecues fill the air. Jerk chicken is a popular dish from Jamaica, known for its spicy and smoky flavor. 0 likes

Hilib Ari

Somaliland, a self-declared independent state, is known for its rich culinary traditions, often incorporating locally available ingredients such as camel meat, which is a staple in many dishes. One of the popular dishes featuring camel meat is “Hilib Ari,” a traditional Somali grilled camel meat recipe. My visit in December 2019 also taught me not to try camel milk before a long journey. My hosts suggested it would have had a laxative effect. When we got back from the long drive from Hargeisa to Berbera (and back), I tried camel milk tea and noticed no particular ‘side effects’. 0 […]

San Diego fish taco

My good friend Nitza introduced me to Mexican food in San Diego in 1988. Compared with Mexican food I had tried in Europe, it was delicious. This is my take on the ‘San Diego fish taco’. 0 likes

Gromperekichelcher

Some of my fondest memories of living in Luxembourg are of the delicious smells coming from the snacks on offer at Schueberfouer, a famous annual fair in Luxembourg that dates back to the 14th century. It is one of the largest and oldest funfair in the country and is held in the city of Luxembourg, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The fair takes place over a few weeks during the summer and attracts both locals and tourists alike. Schueberfouer features a wide array of attractions, rides, games, and various food stalls offering traditional Luxembourgish and international cuisine. […]

Known as the “Pearl of the Orient,” Penang is famous for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant culinary scene, and beautiful landscapes. The state is renowned for its diverse and flavorful cuisine, which reflects a fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and European influences. Beef bulgogi

Beef bulgogi is a popular Korean dish known for its sweet and savory flavors. It consists of thin, marinated slices of meat, most commonly beef, grilled on a barbecue or stove-top griddle. When cooked at home, bulgogi is also often stir-fried in a pan or wok. Sirloin and rib eye are frequently used cuts of beef for the dish. Bulgogi is very popular in South Korea, where it can be found in upscale restaurants and local supermarkets as pan-ready kits. 0 likes
